This information lets the sourcing team separate direct matches from alternative options and focus attention on the lines that create the most risk for the build. For a multi-line program, flag the critical components and include the latest BOM revision.
Shortage sourcing is a commercial and technical review, not just a wider search. Final technical approval for alternatives should remain with the buyer's authorized engineering team.
